The right format depends on where the barcode will be scanned. Code 128 is the workhorse for internal use, such as asset tags, shelf labels and warehouse bins, because it packs both letters and numbers into a compact code. Code 39 does a similar job and is common in logistics and the automotive trade.
For anything sold through retail, you generally need EAN-13 (used worldwide) or UPC-A (used in North America). These are the barcodes a shop till scans, and the numbers are not arbitrary: a genuine retail barcode uses a company prefix issued by GS1. ITF-14 sits on the outer cartons that products ship in. If a barcode is only for your own tracking, Code 128 is almost always the simplest choice.
Barcodes fail at the scanner for boring, avoidable reasons. Keep enough plain white space (the quiet zone) on either side of the bars, and do not stretch or squash the code, since distorting the bar widths is what breaks a scan. Print in solid black on a light background at a sensible size.
For print, the SVG download is the safer choice, because it stays razor sharp at any size, from a small label to a large carton. Whichever you use, print one and scan it with a real barcode reader or a phone app before running off a whole batch. Note that this tool draws the barcode for the value you enter, but it does not register that number with any retail database, so for products sold in shops you still need an official GS1 number.
